Wakaliwood,
the slum studio
Kampala, Uganda
2022In Uganda, the film industry is lagging behind in comparison to some of its African neighbours. However, one brand has managed to pull out of the game by offering a very special formula : kung-fu films with cheap special effects made in the heart of a slum for less than two hundred euros.
Located in the backyard of its founder and sole director, Isaac Nabwana, the Wakaliwood studio has been releasing feature films for the past ten years that have won unanimous acclaim in Uganda. True epicenter of the industry in the country, the studio has gradually built up its international recognition, and some films have thus become classics, such as “Who killed Captain Alex? ".
