Kampala waste pickers

Kampala, Uganda
2022
Waste collection is one of the most criticized services in Kampala. Alongside the poor, underfunded municipal services, the Kiteezi landfill, one of the largest in Africa, gathers more than 1,000 pickers manually sorting the wastes every day.
80% of them are women. Recent studies on the gender dynamics in this service highlight the existing inequalities and denounce disproportionate effects on women in Kampala, both at the dump and in the municipal service.

Actions have therefore recently been implemented ; the inhabitants have come together in women's social associations which oversee the profession and guarantee their rights. By focusing on training, mentoring, and the development of techniques for reusing materials, the women of Kiteezi acquire skills and benefit from additional incomes.
