The massive influx of refugees in the West Nile area from 2014, mainly from South Sudan, caused the acceleration of deforestation in the region : in the camps, the activity requires a daily harvest of firewood. Some women walk eight hours everyday to bring back a bundle of wood that they will sell for less than two euros in their village. This demand, coupled with the clearing of plots to accommodate new arrivals, creates tensions between refugees and local communities, and a local wood traffic has emerged.
To counter that, the populations are currently implementing measures to reduce their consumption and reforest the forest. This mission would also reduce climate risks, which plague the country, and which displaced 700,000 Ugandans last year.
